  SUITABLE SOIL

Well-drained sandy loam or loamy soil rich in organic matter, with a pH of 5.5–6.8. Tomatoes require fertile soil with good moisture retention and aeration.

 REGION

Major producing states include Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba. The North-West and North-Central regions are the leading producers due to their favorable climate and soil conditions.

  SOWING PERIOD

Rain-fed farming: March–June (beginning of the rainy season). Irrigated farming: October–December (dry season farming).

  HARVESTING PERIOD

Rain-fed planting: July–September. Irrigated planting: February–April.

 DURATION

Early-maturing varieties: 60–75 days. Late-maturing varieties: 80–110 days.

  CULTIVATION

Land Preparation: Land is cleared, plowed, and harrowed for proper root development. Raised beds or ridges are used for better drainage. Planting: Tomatoes are propagated through nursery-raised seedlings, which are later transplanted at 4–6 weeks old. Recommended spacing: 50 cm × 75 cm. Fertilizer Application: Apply organic manure (compost or poultry droppings) before planting. Use NPK 15:15:15 at transplanting and top-dress with Urea (46% N) at flowering.

  PEST AND CONTROL

Application of Lambda-cyhalothrin or Cypermethrin to manage insect infestations. Crop rotation and use of resistant varieties to reduce pest buildup.

  HARVESTING METHOD

Tomatoes are harvested manually when they reach the breaker stage (half-ripe) for storage and transportation. Sorting and grading ensure quality for market or processing.

  ECONOMIC POTENTIAL

Nigeria is the largest tomato producer in West Africa, producing over 2 million metric tons annually. High demand for fresh consumption, tomato paste production, ketchup, and dried tomatoes. Government support includes CBN’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) and the Tomato Policy Initiative, which restricts tomato paste imports to boost local production. High export potential for fresh tomatoes, processed tomato paste, and dried tomato powder.
